How Kraken’s Affiliate Program Works
Kraken’s Affiliate program pays you 20% of each invitees’ trading fees up to $1,000 per invitee. To join the Affiliate program, you have to first sign up for Kraken’s Affiliate program on Impact. Then, if you get approved, you’ll be able to share your code and get paid.
Unfortunately, there is no benefit to share with the people who use your link or code to sign up. That means that your referral code won’t net people a trading fee discount or a cash bonus like it does on other platforms. However, as a plus, you can run your Kraken promotion like a traditional ad with the help of Impact’s platform (a great platform for influencers and affiliate marketers that you’ll likely want to check out anyway).
Kraken Affiliate Commission Structure
As noted above, you’ll earn 20% of fees up to $1,000 per invitee for life with the Kraken Affiliate program. Beyond the basics, the following rules apply:
- Trading fee calculations include spot trade fees, margin opening fees, and margin rollover fees.
- Futures fees are excluded from the Kraken Affiliate program.
- There are no deadlines.
- Payouts are paid directly to your bank account via Impact instead of an exchange account.
- Payouts are in your bank’s default fiat currency, not cryptocurrency.
Kraken Affiliate Program Rules and Requirements
See a full list of Kraken Affiliate program rules if you are looking for the fine print. If not here are some of the most crucial rules for the Kraken Affiliate program at a glance:
- Social Media accounts need at least 500 followers.
- Websites must be cryptocurrency-related.
- You will only be credited for referrals that can be tracked. Some browsers like Brave browser that block ads may prevent ad tracking.
Kraken Affiliate Program Review
Kraken is a top-tier exchange, and their Affiliate program offers top-tier earnings. We really like that we can get commission for life, up to the $1,000 limit, as this rewards us for sharing with small-time traders who might trade slowly over time rather than all at once (something some other top exchanges don’t do).
Unfortunately, Kraken falls short in a big way in that they offer nothing to invitees who sign up with their code. We also don’t love that there is no on-exchange referral program for Kraken. Even sharing the affiliate program with other affiliate marketers potentially fails to earn a reward. That drawdown is something almost every other exchange offers! One other minor gripe is that futures trading is excluded from referral revenue, which is not the industry norm.
The number of significant drawbacks generally would have merited a 3-star review. However, Kraken is a top US exchange, so they are easy to recommend regardless of incentive. In short, the reputation as an exchange is giving the Affiliate program rating a bump here. We wish they would offer something to the invitee to make this an easier pitch and a more exciting offer. Still, our gripes with the program are ultimately overshadowed by their platform’s quality, and that’s the bottom line.

About Kraken
Kraken is a US-based crypto exchange founded in 2011 and began operations in 2013, making them one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges still in existence. From their start-up roots to assistance in reclaiming lost BTC from the Mt. GOX hack, and their partnership with Bloomberg terminal, it is a story worth hearing. For the full story, we suggest checking out the history of Kraken on Investopedia.
Regardless of their history, Kraken offers have a wide range of products compared to their US competition, including spot, margin, and futures. Kraken’s longevity in the space and their stellar reputation make them, like Coinbase and Gemini, an easy pick for someone’s primary exchange if they live in the US. In fact, if you live in a state where Kraken is a viable alternative to Coinbase, and you want to be able to both long and short, Kraken might be your best option!
Kraken Liquidity
Most of the time, Kraken doesn’t have liquidity issues. However, in volatile market conditions, there have been more than a few times when lacking liquidity resulted in a spree of large liquidations. This issue happens enough that you can Google “Kraken flash crash” and likely find recent news on the matter; for example, you might see this story of the Kraken flash crash of ETH in 2021.
In short, while you typically won’t have issues trading Kraken’s markets, in times of significant volatility, flash crashes have been known to occur. This is the main frustrating factor about Kraken since it is one of the only options for cryptocurrency margin trading in the US.
Kraken Fees
Kraken’s fees differ depending on the product but are generally competitive for a US-based cryptocurrency exchange; their fees are notably cheaper than Coinbase and Gemini, which is a big selling point in our opinion.
For the “instant buy” option, it is a 0.9% fee for any stablecoin base pair, FX and any crypto base pairs have a 1.5% fee. For Kraken Pro, you can see the fee schedule below. Please check out the Kraken Fee Schedule link below our table for other details like margin and futures fees.

Kraken Products
Kraken has a large selection of products compared to the competition in the US. Their products notably include margin short and long and futures trading, which is rare for a US exchange. In terms of coin selection, however, they fall more in the middle of the pack. We have listed Kraken’s current spot crypto pairs as of 2021. See the link below our table for a complete overview of coins and products if you need more info.

Kraken Security & Integrity
Kraken has been nearly free from hacks in its long history and has a reputation of being a safe place to trade (aside from the flash crashes). With that said, there is one notable security issue to bring up.
In 2015 Kraken was hit with a DDos attack that left traders unable to sell. This event wasn’t only a concern in terms of it being an exploit of the exchange, it was a concern in that it left traders without a way to exit positions at what was the time a market top.
Luckily, since 2015 Kraken has not had any notable security issues.
Kraken Accepted Payment Methods
Kraken supports USD, EUR, CAD, AUD, GBP, CHF and JPY. In most cases, you’ll have the option of funding your account using a bank transfer. Also, in some countries, you can choose to use a debit/credit card as well. Your exact method of funding depends on the country you are trying to create an account in. To verify exactly which payment method will work for your country we suggest you see this full list of Kraken payment methods by country.
One thing to note here is that there may be deposit fees and processing times to consider when depositing in your account. The exact fee can also differ by country, so keep this in mind when opening an account.
Kraken Supported Countries
First off, Kraken allows pre-verification but doesn’t offer service to residents of New York or Washington. With that in mind, Kraken supports most countries, but they do have some notable geographic restrictions.
Kraken does not offer service to residents of:
- Afghanistan
- Congo-Brazzaville
- Congo-Kinshasa
- Cuba
- Iran
- Iraq
- Libya
- North Korea
- Syria
- Tajikistan
Here are some Restricted Service countries that while people can create an account they may be restricted from funding it:
- Central African Republic
- Eritrea
- Guinea-Bissau
- Lebanon
- Mali
- Namibia
- Somalia
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Yemen
